Hall cottage is a new build replacement dwelling, built for a local Landowner, it is part of their estate and is used as a rental home. The site is set in a small rural hamlet. Our first decision was to design a house that would complement the context of this settlement. This meant adopting the materials and methods and, as far as possible, the dimensions of the historic houses in the village. The intention was not to produce a house which would appear to be older than it really is, but rather to blend together with the other houses in the area.

The house complies with the Code for Sustainable Homes (which has since been abolished). This means that it satisfies many criteria, such as water saving, ecological improvements and energy efficiency. In this property both the domestic hot water and the space heating is provided by a ground source heat pump. In addition to this the house qualifies as a Lifetime Home.
